Teacher Training - Understanding Inversions - Preparations, Problems, Practice in Berkeley Springs, WV

  • Serendipity in Berkeley Spring, WV 102 Hull Drive Berkeley Springs, WV (map)

B.K.S. Iyengar calls Sirsasana (Headstand) and Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) respectively the King and Mother of all asanas. They earn these titles by providing so many benefits to the practitioner that they come close to being Yogic Snake Oil. They are the core of the asana practice in Iyengar Yoga, and once the practitioner has learned them, they become the indispensable poses. The challenge lies in Iearning to do them and do them well. Proper preparation is essential, and correct actions are crucial to obtain the full benefit and avoid injury.

Over the weekend, we will see what poses prepare the student to practice inversions safely and effectively. We will learn and practice proper technique for all the inversions, including Halasana (Plow), Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand), Pincha Mayurasana (Elbow Balance), and many of the variations of the above poses. Fear is often the greatest obstacle to learning inversions and we will explore ways to work with and overcome that fear. And we will look at the most common problems you will encounter in teaching these invaluable asanas to your students to discover effective ways to deal with them. As always, we will practice teach in the afternoon classes to improve your skills. Optional early morning practice is open to all.
